Christmas Eve dawned grey and dismal, like Jim’s mood.

The weather was about as far removed from a scene on a Christmas card as you could get. It was blowing a bloody gale and pissing down with rain.

Jim looked out of the window and thanked his lucky stars he’d done his supermarket run last night, so he didn’t have to go anywhere in this. He spared a thought for Patrick on his delivery round and was grateful that his job didn’t involve leaving the house.

Jim had got his green energy article finished and submitted yesterday and had no deadlines now until early January. Rather than start anything new, he decided to get back to his novel and see if he could churn out another chapter. Hoping to catch sight of Patrick, he set up his laptop on the table in the window again, not caring how obvious he might look.

He struggled to focus on his story, glancing up from the screen every few minutes to scan the street for any sign of Patrick. He wished he had a parcel due today. After their conversation and the meaningful exchange of glances at the checkout yesterday, he was ready to finally make a move. He just needed the opportunity. Maybe by some miracle his parents would have posted him something other than a voucher this year?

But when the time came for Patrick’s round, Jim heard the clang of the letterbox and the doorbell remained obstinately silent. He watched Patrick go by, his head down against the driving rain, hat pulled low around his ears. Patrick turned and glanced at Jim’s window. He waved as he passed, his grin cheerful despite the rain. Jim waved back, forcing a smile onto his face and trying to ignore the disappointment that settled in his stomach like cold, lumpy porridge at the thought of not seeing Patrick again until after Christmas.
